Summary
After installing boot logon, it is possible that certain issues might arise, such as the system failing to continue to boot into Windows, showing instead a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top-left corner, a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), or a message indicating the system is unable to find the operating system ( Missing Operating System message).
If you encounter issue where you are unable to boot the system after installing boot logon, use the contents of this article to guide the repair process. This article covers the most common settings that can be changed in order to get a system to work.
NOTE: To make these changes, you will need to have a SecureDoc Administrator Account.
How to Make Changes to the Boot Logon Settings 1) Type in the SecureDoc Administrator's user name and press Enter
2) Type in the SecureDoc Administrator's password. DO NOT PRESS ENTER
3) Press the F8 Key This brings up the Boot Configuration menu
4) To bring up the Advanced Boot Configuration menu, press the F5 key.
MBR Access Mode The MBR Access Mode is important to try when having issues with the Boot Logon immediately after logging in. Missing Operating System Error Loading Operating System A black screen with a blinking cursor then these are good values with which to start troubleshooting.
The Default MBR Access Mode value is "0"
There are 3 other values: 1, 2, and 3.
When you save the settings, the system will continue to boot. If you should experience the same issue as before, restart the system, get back into the Advanced Boot Configuration menu and try another value, save, reboot and monitor whether the new value corrects the problem.
X-Mode and X-Start values.
These values are found on the Advanced Boot Configuration menu. To get to this menu, use step 4 from above. The X-Mode, and X-Start values are useful for troubleshooting most Boot Logon issues. The Default X-Mode values can be the following (these varied according to the SecureDoc Version number).
4.2 and earlier - 00 4.3 to 4.91 SR2 - 05 4.91 SR2+ - 45
The available X-Mode values are as follows, 00 01 02 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08
The Default X-Start value is 440
All of the X-Start values are as follows, 440, 640, 740, 840, ,c40, f40
When working with the X-Mode and X-Start values, we are looking for a combination that will work to boot the system into windows.
When changing these values you will experience the following symptoms:
Loading SecureDoc Boot Loader . . . . Black Screen with a blinking cursor Error Loading Operating System Missing Operating System Blue screen of death.
Before changing the X-Start values, it is suggested that you only go through the X-Mode values. Many times the system will begin to work without having to change the X-Start values.
If the system still will not boot into Windows cleanly, switch back to the default X-Mode value and then for each X-Mode value try all of the X-Start values.
