1983 SecureDoc 9.0 SR4 Failure leaves disk in Write Protected mode

Prev Next

Affected Versions. v9.0 SR4

Introduced with SecureDoc 9.0 Service Release 3 is the OPAL::Range1 feature that is found exclusively with SecureDoc Windows Client deployments that make use of the PBLU (Pre-Boot Linux for UEFI) bootloader. This feature extends the available pre-boot size from 128MB (the default size of the Shadow MBR) to 2GB.

Concern for SecureDoc: During the Hardware Encryption and Decryption process the OPAL::Range1 feature makes uses of disk access permissions that will enable or disable a WriteLock to prevent unintended access from non-WinMagic sources.

In the event that the Encryption or Decryption process is interrupted by a BSOD event it is possible that the WriteLock component of the OPAL::Range1 feature will remain and the disk will no longer be able to boot to Windows. Instead, a “No Operating System Found” message might be displayed by the BIOS instead.

The contents of the disk will still be readable if the drive is inserted as a Secondary Disk in another device, and the contents of the disk can be copied to the Primary Disk or a Removable USB Media. However, if any file or folder requires applying new permissions to access their contents (anything found in “C:\Users\<user_name>” ), those files are not recoverable at all.

Work-Around:

There is no workaround at this time.

Please contact your OEM provider, or the Drive Manufacturer to replace the affected drive.
