1335 Why WinMagic recommends Scan Disk before installation of SecureDoc

Prev Next

Bad blocks/sectors on the hard drive (physical defects on the drive surface) can cause problems with the encryption process and subsequent failures on the PC to boot up.  During normal operations, these defects can go unnoticed until data is written to them, giving the appearance that the PC is operating normally.  It’s a lot like a serious illness that does not present itself until an unrelated symptom appears.

The whole hard drive encryption process reads and writes to every section of the hard drive.  Once SecureDoc comes across one of these bad parts of the hard drive, the hard drive might freeze.  The failure point is at a section of the hard drive called the File System Table, which is an index that tells the operating system where all the files are located on the hard drive.

This failure is not specifically related to the encryption software as this type of failure has been documented with all vendors that make whole hard drive encryption.  While the encryption process bought it to light, the problem prior to the start of the process.

Thus, we strongly recommend running scan disk to ensure the disk is healthy before proceeding with SecureDoc installation.

During encryption, if error 0x000000C9 or C000000185 appears, please use disk scan tools to resolve bad sector issues with the disk.
