WinMagic has observed that when using our SecureDoc File Encryption (SFE) feature to encrypt the entire Windows user profile folder, and when enabling Persistent Encryption, it can cause issues that result in data corruption or loss. The specific scenario is as follows:

If you have created a SecureDoc Enterprise Endpoint profile that contain the following settings in the SFE (SecureDoc File Encryption) tab:

  • Users may encrypt specific Files and Folders
  • Activate "persistent encryption"

After deploying SecureDoc to a Windows client using the above SFE policies, and assigning a new SFE folder policy to the full Windows user profile folder, i.e. C:\Users\JohnSmith – including all sub folders, you may receive “Unexpected error: 232" among other issues. Including possible data loss or corruption.

This issue ONLY appears if you enable the Persistent Encryption option within SFE.  It is NOT recommended to use Persistent Encryption when using SFE to protect Windows user profile folders.
