1909 - How to set up Jamf for MAC deployment

Preparation to setup Jamf Now Plus:

  • Open the following link and Create your Free Account for jamf Now

  • Once the account is active, log into your account and click on your Account name at the left bottom corner to upgrade the product to Jamf Now Plus.(Jamf Now Plus produce provides you the ability to create your own customized mac pkg for distribution)
  • Once upgraded to Jamf Now Plus, click on the Link Learn about Jamf Now Plans, it will compare all differences between Jamf Now and Jamf Now Plus:
  • Locate to the "Includes access to Jamf Composer" row and click on the Learn more which will guide you to Download Composer (This is .dmg file which needs to be installed on Mac device):
  • Jamf Composer Version 10.30.0 has been saved under \\virtualserver\transfer\ToLucy\Jamf Product\Composer10.30.0.dmg

 Login to your Jamf Now Plus account and enroll devices (The first 3 devices are free of charge):

How to use Jamf Composer to transfer our SDFVMac.dmg to SecureDoc.pkg which Jamf can use to distribute:

Follow the detailed steps in the video which located in the Transfer folder: \\virtualserver\transfer\ToLucy\Jamf Product\SD_JAMF_Composer.mkv

  1. Copy and paste SDFVMac.dmg from SES server side and put it on the Mac client Desktop which has Jamf Composer installed
  2. Open Composer and select Monitor File System Changes and click on Next
  3. Under Package Name box, choose a name for your package such as SecureDoc and click on Next
  4. At Perform your Installation page, click on Create Package Source
  5. After Building resource is done, now you have blank SecureDoc sources
  6. Copy and paste SDFVMac.dmg on the Desktop to some places you want it saved on your deploying customer machines: for example Go to Folder /var/tmp/ and create New Folder called sd and saved SDFVMac.dmg inside sd folder
  7. Drag SDFVMac.dmg from /var/tmp/sd folder to Composer under SecureDoc sources
  8. Go back to Composer and spanned the SecureDoc tree and make sure we have 4 folders
  9. Highlight the sd folder and make sure to set permission as showed below. And click on the Gear icon to select Apply Permissions to sd and All Enclosed Items and also Apply Owner and Group to sd and All Enclosed Items
  10. Spanned SecureDoc Sources and Right Click on the Scripts folder and choose Add Shell Script -> postinstall
  11. Edit postinstall script and the sample postinstall script is shown as below:
  12.  After postinstall script is done, go to Composer -> Preferences... -> enable Sign with Developer ID installer: WinMagic Corp. (JQ8GZWPR26)
  13. Developer Certificate is in our Perforce
  14. After the Certificate is added correctly, click on Build as PKG
  15. It will show signed pkg (such as SecureDoc.pkg) under PACKAGES sector in Composer, and the newly created pkg will be saved on the Desktop

Upload pkg to the Jamf account and ready for distribute:

  • Login Jamf Now Plus
  • Click Apps -> +Add an App -> Upload your App -> Drag & drop your app file or browse
  • Select created .pkg and upload the file to Jamf

Deploying an App for a Single Device

  1. Log in to Jamf Now Plus
  2. Click Devices.
  3. Select the device for which you would like to deploy or remove an app.
  4. Click the Mac Apps tab.

You will now see a list of the apps deployed from the Blueprint your device is under, and also Additional Apps in Library.

  1. Navigate to the Additional Apps in Library section.
  2. Click the Action pop-up menu (•••) to the right of the App information.
  3. Select Install on this device. 

After the status changed to Sent to Device which means the package has been deployed on the client device.
