Title: Wireless Error 7 for Lenovo ThinkPad L490
Environment:
System: Lenovo ThinkPad L490
OS: Win10 UEFI
Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160MHz
PBLU 64
Affected Version:
SecureDoc 8.5 SR2 and SecureDoc 8.6.
Issue:
At pre-boot, a scan for wireless devices may show Error 7, indicating the Pre-Boot cannot locate the wireless card
After restart/shutdown (depending on the power management plan and power settings) the wireless chipset may stay programmed and active (for fast start) and that usually causes the Linux environment in a Windows/Linux dual-boot device to be unable to probe and re-initialize the device.
This applies to the case where the devices is plugged in. If the device is on battery power or shutdown manually ( power button ), there is no issue.
Cause:
A common problem with Intel iwlwifi and dual boot is that Windows will configure the device and download a newer firmware to it.
This issue applies to:
- Devices with SED, Intel iwlwifi and dual boot Windows/Linux
- SecureDoc package with Hardware or software encryption enabled
How to reproduce the issue:
- Plug the device into a power source or mains power.
- Install the package and shut down normally
- At pre-boot, scan for wireless devices. Error 7 will be observed, indicating the Pre-Boot cannot locate the wireless card
Work-Around options:
- Force-shutdown the device by pressing and holding the power button.
- Disable the fast startup feature in the BIOS/UEFI.
- Unplug the device from the power source (or if the device uses an internal battery, disengage the battery for about 30 seconds), which will automatically disable fast startup.
These solutions work for Windows 10. there is also the option ofadding wmsd_iwlwifi=1 to boot parameters of the SecureDoc profile. However, if this doesn’t solve the problem, there is a chance that the device gets caught in a reboot loop.
