1519 - How to deploy a customized preboot Background image

Topic: This article describes how to import a customized Pre-Boot background image, thus incorporating company name, logo, terms of use or other graphic elements on corporate devices.

Note: Please refer to the SES User Guide and the SecureDoc Enterprise User Guide (for SES-managed devices) and the Stand-Alone user guide for stand-alone devices for more detail information.

Issue: Many customers wish to have their company's branding reflected in the background screen that appears at Pre-Boot. This article covers the requirements to roll out an installation packages including a customized background?

Product version affected: All SD versions

Environment (OS/hardware/software):
All Windows OS and devices
Mac OS X

Solution:

The information this can be found in the section of the SES User Guide entitled "Text, Color and Logo Options for Boot Logon (PBA)", some of which is repeated below.

Boot text and color options control the way Boot Logon appears on all client devices that install the installation package using a given profile.
The options allow the customer to customize Boot Logon to reflect information relevant to their corporation environment.

To access the options, open the Profile screen and click on the button entitled "Boot text and color".

To define a customized background for a Windows device, the graphic file needs to meet these requirements:

  • 24-bit .bmp format
  • 1024 x 768 pixels
  • When zipped (SecureDoc zips the file for you), it can be no larger than 0.5MB (A warning message will appear, if the image file exceeds this size limit)

Note: For a Mac device, the file should be in .PNG format (Portable Network Graphic) format.

Recommendations:

  1. Please pay close attention to the placement of the pre-boot prompt field locations in the default WinMagic-branded logo, so that the background graphics do not interfere with the legibility of those elements.
  2. Start with a photo of the SES default background and use that to advise your graphics team on relative placement of normally visible elements that must be legible at pre-boot.
  3. Ensure that approximately the lowest 1/6th of the logo image will be a solid dark color, so that the network icons and language selector option appear clearly. These icons and the selector are always white or very light in color and will not be easily seen on a light-colored background.
  4. If the background logo is predominantly very dark in color, please choose a contrasting color for prompt text.

NOTE: Only computers with a high-resolution monitor (the most common type) will display the customized logo — other monitors will show the default Boot Logon display.

Any customized logos will also not appear on devices using Permanent AutoBoot or HPM (Lenovo's Hardware Password Manager), which do not show the Boot Logon screen.

Implementation/Deployment of a Customized Background Image:

Having created a custom background image file and imported it into an SES profile, that custom background will appear on all NEW SecureDoc installations that reference that Profile, but deployment of the updated profile will not change the background for any already-deployed devices.

To apply a customized background to an already-installed SES-Managed SecureDoc client device or a Stand-Alone device, the background image must be imported into the device itself by a user that has logged on using an Administrator key file.

For SES-managed devices, please refer to the SecureDoc Enterprise User Guide, in the section entitled "Customizing Boot Logon", in the subsection entitled "Boot Text and Color".  For Stand-Alone devices, please look for the same section in the SecureDoc Stand-Alone User Guide.
