Device Access Security - User guidance on social engineering

While SecureDoc performs an invaluable service ensuring that data is protected by encryption, and that user access to SecureDoc-protected devices is locked down and governed by permitting only specific users to authenticate at Pre-Boot, there are other risks that any security-conscious organization should be aware of and include in its overall security design.

User guidance on social engineering

Social engineering (e.g. phishing) is a very common tactic used by fraudsters in order to gain access to your confidential information, such as accessing your computers to secretly install malicious software that give them access to your passwords and bank information as well as giving them control over your computer.

Phishing involves false/unsolicited emails, chats, websites that look like legitimate and trick you to submit your personal information or to accept the installation of malware under the guise of something else.

By itself, SecureDoc does not detect or mitigate the risks of phishing / fraudulent emails.  In order to ensure customers are protected against Phishing, WinMagic recommends the following measures:

  • Make sure your emails have verifiable signature
  • Do NOT click on suspicious links/websites, download files or open spam email messages and/or attachments that come from unrecognized senders
  • Never share your personal information over the Internet
  • Make sure your computer firewall is turned on
  • Make sure automatic update is turned on to get all the latest security updates
