Self Extractor User Guide
Note: SecureDoc Self-Extractor is a Windows utility. It will not run directly under Mac OSX, although it will run on a Mac running a Windows emulator.
About the SecureDoc Self-Extractor
The self-extractor is useful for securely sharing confidential information with people who do not have SecureDoc.
Selected files or folders are packaged into a secure executable archive file containing both an encrypted copy of the file and the encryption information needed to decrypt it. To open the archive and extract its contents (in decrypted form), users simply double-click on an archive and provide the appropriate password.
The self-extractor utility is bundled with the SecureDoc installation. It can be found in this folder:
C:\Program Files\WinMagic\SecureDoc-NT"
Advantages of SecureDoc Self-Extractor
1) No admin privilege required
2) Built-in compression and encryption
3) Utilizes a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic module
Setting up the Self-Extractor
Either: If SecureDoc is installed on your laptop, right click on the SecureDoc icon in the system tray, and select: SecureDoc File Encryption Settings, then check the box Enable Self-Extractor. Select Apply, and then OK.
Or: Save the SecureDocSFX.exe executable to your local drive
Encrypting files and folders
The following instructions describe how to save an encrypted, password protected, executable archive on the removable media.
A. If SecureDoc is installed:
1. Right-click on a file or folder and choose SecureDoc SFX. A new screen appears. Note: The screen lists the file or the folder and its contents.
a. To add additional folders (and its associated files) to the archive, click Add folder and navigate to the location of the folder.
b. To add files to the archive, click Add files and navigate to the location of the files.
Note: To clear the list and begin again, click Clear List.
2. In the bottom portion of the screen, click Browse, navigate to the location where you want the archive to be saved, and enter a name for the archive (typically you might browse directly to the USB drive that you are saving the archive to).
3. Before selecting Save, click on the pull-down beside "Save as type", and change to Self-extractor Executables (*.EXE) (this saves the end-user an additional step when they decrypt the file(s) at the other end).
Note: .CAB extension is useful if you are sending the encrypted archive by email.
4. Enter a password (SecureDoc password rules do not apply, therefore the user should be told of the importance of selecting a strong password).
5. To eliminate typing errors, check Enable password confirming and enter the password again.
6. Once information is complete, click Create. A confirmation message appears, and the utility screen closes. The archive is created in the specified location.
B: If you do not have SecureDoc but you have saved the executable:
Note: If you do not have the full SecureDoc application installed, the ability to right- click on any file or folder is not available. Instead, you must double-click on the executable icon. You are then presented with the "SecureDoc Self-Extractor File Creator" window.
1. To select one or more folders (and their associated files) to be encrypted, click Add folder and navigate to the location of the folder (alternatively click Add files and navigate to the location of the files).
Note: To clear the list and begin again, click Clear List.
2. In the bottom portion of the screen, click Browse, navigate to the location where you want the archive to be saved, and enter a name for the archive (typically you might browse directly to the USB drive that you are saving the archive to).
3. Before selecting Save, click on the pull-down beside "Save as type", and change the type to Self-extractor Executables (*.EXE) (this saves the end-user an additional step when they decrypt the file(s) at the other end).
Note: .CAB extension is useful if you are sending the encrypted archive by email.
4. Enter a password (SecureDoc password rules do not apply, therefore the User should be told of the importance of selecting a strong password).
5. To eliminate typing errors, check Enable password confirming and enter the password again.
6. Once the information is complete, click Create. A confirmation message appears, and the utility screen closes. The archive is created in the specified location.
Note: Do not close the interface or click other buttons during the archive creation process.
